Specialisms
Madeley High School is a high performing Specialist Technology College with joint second specialisms in Arts and Cognition and Learning. Specialist Schools are committed to raising standards, developing new approaches to learning and teaching, and contributing to the development of partner schools and the local community by enhancing pupils' experiences in their chosen Specialist Subject areas.
Schools applying for specialist status must prepare and submit a detailed four year development plan for raising standards to the government. If successful, the school receives a one-off capital grant of £100,000 along with an annual grant of £129 per pupil. One-third of the grant must be used to implement the Community/Partner School Targets as specified in the development plan. Schools must reapply for specialist status every four years with a more innovative and demanding set of targets each time. They will lose their status if they fail to perform.
Madeley High School was officially recognised by the government as a "High Performing Specialist School" in September 2006 and invited to apply for re-designation with a second specialism. We took the unusual step of applying for joint second specialisms in two areas; Arts and Cognition and Learning. Our re-designation with these second specialisms was approved in October 2006.
